Though tactile and beautiful, the materials carry a sedimented weight: of extraction, ritual, and geopolitical tension. The object stages a deliberate juxtaposition between Baltic amber—formed over 50 million years ago—and Kauri gum from New Zealand, a resin recently harvested from Agathis australis, the closest living relative of the extinct Baltic pines that once produced amber.
This dialogue between ancient and contemporary activates a broader reflection on cultural memory, colonial histories, and the shifting boundaries between centre and periphery. Both a vessel for light and a bearer of layered time, the candlestick positions material not as passive matter, but as an active participant in narrative, meaning, and action.
